A PS5 that accepts discs but will not read them, ejects randomly, or makes grinding noises usually has a disc drive fault, not a software glitch. Digital games may still work fine because the storage and account are separate from the optical drive.
Symptoms that point to the drive
- Disc spins but game never loads, or you get “unrecognized disc”.
- Drive makes clicking, grinding or loud whirring on insert.
- Disc ejects by itself or will not eject without repeated attempts.
- Problem started after the console was knocked while a disc was inside.
- Only certain discs fail (can still indicate a weakening laser or dirty lens, but physical damage is common).
Quick checks at home
- Try a disc you know is clean and not scratched.
- Restart the console fully (hold power until double beep).
- Check for a pending system update, but do not expect updates to fix mechanical drive faults.
- If the drive is physically loose or discs jam, stop forcing them in. You can damage the mechanism further.
What repair involves
